History of Psychology Essay Modern psychology is a science that it continually being researched and added to. Psychology predates the 19th century and includes roots into early philosophy. Looking closely one can identify philosophers that related to the beginnings of psychology, identify major philosophers that historically relate to the beginnings psychology as a formal discipline and how the development of the science of psychology changed during the 19th century. A philosopher that could easily be called the father of modern psychology would be: Rene Descartes. Descartes was a philosopher in the 17th century that stepped outside the limits and wanted to know more. Descartes came up with 4 basic rules to arrive at the truth of whatever he was researching. These rules were basically to think clearly, logically and without bias (Goodwin, 2008). Descartes had several derived ideas and was considered a nativist and a rationalist. These ideas that he created foreshadowed one of psychologyââ¬â¢s major topics of nature versed nurture. Descartes also fought that there was a difference between a personââ¬â¢s mind and body; and this difference separated us from animals. Before Descartes died he published his last of many books called: The Passions of the Soul. This book established him as a psychologist and a physiologist (Goodwin, 2008). This book emphasized on human emotions and continued on with a discussion about mind and body distinctions. He Clarified the body is a machine and responds to curtain motions, such as fear, that trigger reflexes. Descartes also determined that the pineal glad in the brain was the gland that sent messages from the mind/spirit to the body. Descartes died at just before his 54th birthday in 1650. There were several philosophers that historically relate to the beginnings psychology as a formal discipline. John Locke, George Berkeley, David Hume and John Stuart Mill are just a few to mention. Each philosopher contributed an aspect to psychology that led to its formal discipline. John Locke refused to believe in an innate mind and believed that mind is created by experiences and was not pre programmed. He stated believed that the ideas that come from our minds are due to ones sensations and reflections from experiences (Goodwin, 2008). George Berkeley added an analysis of visual perception. He disagreed with Lockeââ¬â¢s theory of primary and secondary distinctions, but stated that our belief in God gave us a type of reality. David Hume is known for his study of impressions. This study helped research sensations and ideas the thought were due to impressions. Hume also identified the rules of association as resemblance, contiguity and cause/effect (Goodwin, 2008). There are a couple of reasons that psychology changed dramatically in the 19th century. John Stuart Mill was a big part of that change. Even though John Stuart Mill was a very young philosopher, he studied the logic of science and analyzed several methods on how to get a scientific truth. For example, Mill would look in to different genes that could produce depression. Every depressed person that he would look at would have this gene; however that did not mean that if you had the gene that you automatically had depression. In modern times we call his methods the experimental method and the correlation method. These types of methods are use today in the field of psychology. Philosophers are a big part of the modern world of psychology. They helped introduce methods that are still used today and added science to the study. Without philosophers we may still believe that the mind and body are one and that genes create thoughts and ideas and not experiences. We would not understand how visual and sensations react and create thoughts and different experiences. Philosopher Hermann Ebbinghaus once said that ââ¬Å"Psychology has a long past, yet its real history is shortâ⬠(Goodwin, 2008). The Butler S Lifecycle Model Balearic Islands consist of four island which are A, B, C and Mallorca. Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago which accounts for nearly three quarters of the land with 80% of its population in Balearic Island (Bull 1997, 140). It area has covered about 3640 kilometer per square with the 555 km of the total coast length of the island (Garcia and Servera 2003, 288). The climate of Mallorca is typically Mediterranean with moderate average temperatures. During the summer, the dry and warm season takes place. The annual rainfalls are 625 mm, with average temperature 16 celcius and 18 celcious except in the high mountain. With its favorable climate, extensive coastline and attractive beaches have lured visitors for many centuries. The butlers lifecycle model (1980), describes the growth, stagnation and decline phases of a tourist destination can be best apply in the destination of Mallorca from the growth stage to post-stagnation stage. In the period of exploration and involvement stages of Butlers model which started in 1930s tourism takes place in Mallorca act merely as an instrument for stimulating cultural and intellectual activity (Bull 1997, 141). Early development stage 1955s When it comes to 1955 Mallorca Island is in development stage where mass tourism started to grow during that period. There was a re-establishment of the tourist board that have significantly change the tourism on the island whereby the tourism become more closely associated with the development of package holidays and mass tourism from the growing markets in western and northern Europe (Pearce 1991 and Williams 1997). However in 1959, Spanish government took the initiate to simplify the procedure of visiting the country in order to modernize the Spanish economy through tourism by gaining overseas revenue (Stabilisation Act of 1959). The numbers of visitors started to growth constantly in early 1960s, majority of the visitors were dominated from UK and Germany in large volumes concentrated especially during summer season (Clark 1988) (Figure 1). Consolidation stage-1980s-1990s Between 1960s-1980s the consequences from the boom of international tourism to Mallorca, it led to an intensive resort development of the along the coastline. Most of the island originated from the rapid growth of cheap package holidays in the 1960s. However in the late of 1970s, many buildings, resorts and apartments were built in order to cater large numbers of visitors and growing number of the populations. Majority of these early resorts were portrayed by standard high-rise architecture, short of proper infrastructure and lack of planning, which are typical of the consolidation stages of Butlers model. Buswell (1996, 321) has described the growth of tourist resolution on Mallorca as unplanned and piecemeal, even chaotic. After that resorts have been subject matter to stricter planning laws which set up in the 1980s and 1990s. Socio culture impact While tourism provides certain economic benefits to a region at least in the short term, it also causes disturbance to the local way of life. For the locals the concerns may derive due to the unfulfilled promises, destruction of an older and simpler way of life, inadequacy of employment opportunities or dissatisfaction with the economic changes which came with mass tourism development. Before tourism takes place, Calvià ¡ was fundamentally a poor and rural area with little outside contact and general history of emigration with its own language and culture of Catalan roots (Ruzza 2004). However tourism has wholly altered these features; a vast number of immigration from the Spanish peninsula arrived to fulfill the demand for labour created by the growth of mass tourism, particularly in the building industry and the hotel business. Consequent to that the temporary immigrant population, has gradually turn into resident, eventually this causes the loss of cultural identity, conflict over language issues, and lack of social integration within local and immigrant population and tiny participation in local social life. Social impact For the local point of view, visitors seem to utilize the physical environment from the local however the profit that generated from the visitors are not share with the local community. Thus it create adverse impacts on livelihoods and lack of benefit sharing with the local people who will bear tourism related costs to both the human and natural environment. Eventually conflicts arise between local populations with vast number of visitors as they need to compete for limited use of resources such as water, sanitation, energy and land uses. For tourists the view is often recapitulate with the statements such as this used to be a paradise but now it is ruined because of overcrowding, over commercialization or overdevelopment. The production of wastewater and solid waste in visitor areas often surpass the carrying capacity of local infrastructure due the high seasonal demand. With over 60% of Calvià ¡ territory was affected by soil erosion. There was continuous land occupation by urbanization and development of new infrastructure damage caused by quarries and waste dumps and devastation by forest fire. Its important to have individuals that will be able to treat individuals with the respect they are due, regardless of the situation. It is stated that police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law (Fortenbery, 2015). Officers should be able to uphold as well as obey the laws that they are trying to enforce. There is an importance to make sure that these officers receive ethics training to stay on course with the guidelines of dealing with ethical behavior within their profession. And true, due to the fact that we are dealing with human beings, there is a chance of corruption and unethical behavior. So with that being said, the organization as a whole, needs to make sure they are doing what is necessa ry to decrease unethical behavior as well as misconduct. Well when it comes to creating strategies that will be accountable for ethical training, this should be an easy task. As we should know, values have a way of influencing ones attitude as do ones attitude can bear influence on ones behavior (Kerns, 2003). So when it comes to strategies, these values should be incorporated. To begin, having wisdom and knowledge is being able to use information you have and make it useful. Wisdom comes into play when you can use knowledgeable information to make decisions that will result in the greater good. Basically, to do the right thing when facing an ethical dilemma is knowing what to do, knowing the difference between right and wrong (Kerns, 2003). Then there is the strategy of self-control. This simply means that an individual can control themselves in an ethical manner to keep a situation in control. In other words, they dont get hot headed and blow of the handle. Next, one will need justice and fair guidance. With this strategy, an individual must treat others fairly. When others have the feeling of being treated fairly, justice at that moment is served. One must realize that people just want a fair chance. They dont want to be judged due to a technicality that others feel a certain way about them. People do make mistakes because as we all know; no one is perfect. Transcendence would be another strategy to enforce. You as an individual would have to understand that there is something greater than just you alone. Simply put, you are putting institutional and/or stakeholders interest above self-interests. The individual will also need to be able to show love and kindness. Treating people in a kind way helps increase an abundance of affection and love. This too will lead to recognizing and encouraging others for their contributions (Kerns, 2003). Finally, the individual needs to have courage and integrity. Ethics requires the courage to do the r ight things consistently without regard to personal consequences. One will be able to make unpopular decisions based on fair consideration of the facts (Kerns, 2003). When it comes to an organization creating expectations for moral conduct, this is a task that most can handle. Moral conduct is the principal of human behavior that promotes orderly and peaceful existence in a community as well as in the workplace. Once and individual has accepted a position within an organization, they are given moral conduct guidelines and rules. Within these guidelines, it precisely explains the dos and the donts of an organization. Individuals are normally given some sort of merit raises when all these guidelines are followed as well as other goals are also achieved. Basically, your supervisor will explain to you what they expect from you from the start. You are also given guidelines as to the way employees should carry themselves while on the campus of that organization. You are also explained the consequences of your actions that are not in accordance with the conduct. So at this point, there is not any reason one should be doing things that are not allowed acc ording to organizations rules. The organization itself will inform you that they are keeping tabs on how you carry yourself and as well as how you respond to others. This is a way to keep all employees on the same page and for them to also be aware that monitoring of your moral conduct is crucial. The organization has to make sure that all rules are followed and that their customers and upper management are receiving quality service from their employees. As we know, when your work with an organization, in order to get raises, you have to perform well. In order to get this achieved, there has to be a program evaluation set in place. This evaluation is a systematic assessment of the results of program efforts to measure actual outcomes against the intended outcomes of the program; to discover achievement and results; to discover deviations from planned achievements; to judge the worth of the program; to identify unintended consequences; and to recommend expansion, contraction, elimination, or modification of a program (Kirchner, Przybylski, Cardella, 1994). Being able to measure the impact of job performances when it comes to the relation of the goals and objectives they have set out to achieve, means there must be performance indicators involved. These indicators are defined as a way of showing the results of the effort expected. These indicators may be quantitative or qualitative. A quantitative indicator can be expressed as a single measure or a degree of change. Qualitative indicators can be used where quantitative measures are not feasible (Kirchner, Przybylski, Cardella, 1994). With this evaluation in place, leaders will be able to see the areas that have improved as well as the areas that need improving. They will also be able to keep track of each employees status based off the information that has been retained for these individuals. On down the line, the department itself will be able to weed out the good ones as well as the ones that would not be a good fit for the department. This will also help the department run much smoo ther as well as with order in place. People within will be able to provide more useful behavior than the negativity of unwanted behavior. In conclusion, it is the upmost of importance to have an agency that carries the upmost respect for its community. For the people of the community to have respect, the agency must be able to show it. The main goal is to basically treat people the way you want to be treated. And in return for the agency providing a good job, the employees should be rewarded for a job well done. The Archetypical Low-Cost Air Carrier: Southwest Airlines :: Aviation Southwest Airlines Flying Essays
Abstract The seventh largest major domestic airline in the United States (US), Southwest Airlines, is commonly known or referred to as a low-cost carrier. Southwest Airlines is the only major airline that provides short-haul, point-to-point service in the United States. In fact it was the first airline of its type ever started; it has become the archetypical low-cost airline. The idea has proven itself so well, that other start-up airlines have based their company strategies upon the basics of Southwest. Today, there are two other low-cost air carriers (the other two airlines are considered national airlines and not major airlines) that are actively and aggressively competing with Southwest Airlines for business and profit turning. The three American low-cost air carriers are currently posting profits even in light of the US economyââ¬â¢s current state of affairs, with Southwest Airlines first, JetBlue second, and Air Tran third, in profits. How is this possible when the major six airlines are reporting losses of millions and millions of dollars each quarter? The answer to this question begins about 30 years ago. The Archetypical Low-Cost Air Carrier: Southwest Airlines The product one airline can offer is the same exact product the next airline can offer, a single available seat mile (ASM) for sale. The difference between the airlines lies in the marketing, routing, pricing, executive decision-making, and the operating strategies that each airline chooses to espouse regarding that one product. It is through these strategies that an airline must find productivity in total revenue passenger miles (RPM) flown to be profitable. When the ASM is filled with a fare-paying passenger, sales or income is recognized, and it converts to an RPM. The wiring that was installed in a house many years earlier, or even as recently as a decade ago, may not be adequate for the job it is called upon to do today. A complete rewiring job is in order-or is it? Do not jump to the conclusion that every outlet must be torn out and every receptacle replaced. Many times a less expensive job will serve the purpose. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Is the wiring inadequate because you are using too many lights? Too many floor lamps? Too many radios and TVs? That is seldom the case. The wiring usually is inadequate because you have added many electrical appliances that were not considered or perhaps were not even on the market at the time of the original wiring job. The installation does not provide enough circuits to operate a wide assortment of small kitchen appliances, plus range, water heater, clothes dryer, room air conditioners and other heavy appliances. Some of these operate on 240-volt circuits, which may not be available; others operate at 120 volts but when plugged into existing circuits they overload those circuits. In addition, the service entrance equipment may be just too small for the load. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã To analyze the problem of your particular house, ask yourself this: If you disconnected all the appliances, would you have all the lighting circuits you need? The answer is probably yes, which means that your rewiring job is simplified. You will still have to rewire the house, but probably not as completely as at first appeared necessary. What is J.B. Priestly trying to say about Social reform through An Inspector Calls
The play by J. B. Priestley was written in 1945 and was performed in 1946. It was just after WWII so people really got the message about change. He also gave them a message that if they don't change it will happen all over again. Mr Birling plays a main part in the play he is the strong businessman who only cares about his family and his profits. He considers his workers just as cheap labour and nothing more. He sacks Eva Smith after she asks for a pay raise he sacks her with no regard for her well-being (Quotation 6). Priestley has Mr Birling in the play to show why job security and benefits are so important in our lives. Priestley also gets across (Quotation 7) that this happens everywhere. Also it is morally wrong as Priestley shows through Sheila in (Quotation 8). This played a part in Eva Smiths death because she was sacked wrongly and this needs to change that is the message Priestley gets across by using Mr Birling. Sheila is involved in the death of Eva Smith she is trying on a dress and she sees a young girl smiling at her. She storms out and complains to the manager she threatens the manager with cancelling her family account with Millards. Priestley tries to get across in this part that using your family name and your class is wrong. Sheila misuses her power and Priestley wants to stamp this out he believes it to be wrong. Gerald is involved with Eva Smith but this is when she has changed her name to Daisy Renton. He meets her at the palace variety bar and takes her away from a man who is scaring her. He asks her if she would like to stay in some rooms he temporarily has (Quotation 10) he and Daisy start to become close and get intimate but Gerald breaks it off a few weeks later (Quotation 11). Priestley tries to get across through Gerald that you must be responsible for your actions. Gerald just drops Daisy Renton when it suits him and it leaves her distraught and sad. Priestley shows us that taking responsibility for what you have done is extremely important. Mrs Birling is head of an organization that helps poor distraught women get back to their lives. Eva Smith/Daisy Renton comes here under the name of Miss Birling. Mrs Birling takes an instant dislike to Eva/Daisy (Quotation 12). Mrs Birling doesn't believe Eva Smith/Daisy Renton's story and dismisses her that the husband should take full responsibility (Quotation 13). Priestley again shows misuse of power, she could make or break this young girls life but Mrs Birling doesn't do the right thing. Eric also plays a part in the death of Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. He is drunk one evening and started to talk to Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. He takes her home and pesters her to get inside (Quotation 14). He hen got her pregnant (Quotation 15). Eric is used to show us why responsibility is needed in the community he does what he does without thinking about the consequences. Eric then steals money from his fathers business to help Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. Priestley says that if people do not take responsibility for their action bad things will happen. The inspector in the play is used to convey Priestley's views and concerns. He explains how they all contributed to her death (Quotation 16). He explains about how Eric must take responsibility for what he did (Quotation 17). Priestley gets across everything through the inspector and explains how this young girl Eva Smith/Daisy Renton could be anyone, anywhere (Quotation 19). He gets across that not just money is needed things like job security is needed (quotation 18). The inspector in the play voices Priestley's concerns about social reform. Priestley uses an array of ways to convey his views on social reform. He shows it in every character Mr Birling, Mrs Birling, Sheila, Gerald, Eric, they all helped to kill Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. With a lack of responsibility or misuse of power. The inspector gets across Priestley's views in the play by voicing them for him. Also Priestley uses the trick of repeating at he end of the play to show that if you haven't learnt your lesson then it will happen all over again.
